Every line on paper leads to a moment like this.
Today in Savannah, Missouri, we broke ground for the future chapel of St. Elizabeth and All Military Saints — a small but meaningful architectural project that’s been in the works for quite some time.
In traditional architecture, ceremonial milestones matter. There are usually three: the groundbreaking, the setting of the cornerstone, and the final dedication once the building is complete. Today marked the first. Just the beginning — but a significant one.
Around 60 people attended. It wasn’t a spectacle, more like a quiet gathering of those closely involved. Light rain fell right on time, adding a bit of atmosphere. A few words were spoken. A brief service was held. We symbolically opened the excavation site. Then came a modest lunch — barbecue and cake, naturally.
As an architect, it’s hard to explain the mix of responsibility and excitement at moments like this. You spend months — sometimes years — working in drawings, calculations, and models. Then suddenly, the dirt moves, and it all becomes real. Tangible. I’ll write more soon about the concept, the client’s idea, and how this design came to be. It’s a longer story.
This evening I met with the general contractor — solid guy, clear communication. We’ve still got some details to work out, but he’s confident we’ll finish construction before the first snow.
