This place holds a special place in my heart.
The work of Montferrand has always meant a great deal to me—it helped shape my sense of beauty and deeply influenced my path as an architect. Today, I want to share another masterpiece.
Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the largest domed churches in the world, built to impress both spiritually and structurally. The central dome rises over 100 meters high and is covered in more than 100 kilograms of pure gold. Its engineering includes a cast-iron frame—an advanced technique for its time—supporting the enormous weight of the structure.
The building rests on a foundation of thousands of wooden piles driven deep into the marshy ground of St. Petersburg, a feat of planning in itself. The exterior features 112 solid red granite columns, each weighing up to 80 tons, with Corinthian capitals and finely detailed pediments.
Inside, the space is divided by massive columns of malachite and lapis lazuli. The walls and ceiling are covered in intricate mosaics and frescoes rather than paintings—chosen for their durability and monumental impact. The floor is laid with patterned marble slabs from across Europe and Russia.
Every element was designed for permanence and precision. Montferrand oversaw nearly every detail over the 40 years of construction, creating a structure that is not just beautiful but technically brilliant.
