Ever think your construction project is dragging on forever? Try building a church in just one….
A few days ago, I had a chat with a client who’s planning to build a small chapel. His estimate? “Maybe a year… maybe two.”
But back in the day, people built entire churches — not in one year, not in one month — but in a single day!
They were called obétnye churches — “oblation churches” — built during times of disaster like plagues or wars. Entire communities would gather at dawn, and by sunset, the new church would be standing, ready for consecration. No excuses, no delays — just faith, unity, and a lot of elbow grease.
These obetnye churches were usually small, humble, and built fast — but they carried enormous spiritual meaning. People believed they could help save a town from disease or invasion, a literal stronghold of hope raised in a single heartbeat of time.
A few famous examples?
• In 1487, the people of Pskov built the Church of the Holy Mandylion in just one day to fight off a deadly plague.
• In 1654, during another epidemic, Vologda’s citizens raised the Spaso-Vsegradsky Church from the ground by sunset.
• Even remote villages built tiny chapels this way — simple, but mighty in spirit.
So next time someone says a project is “rushed”… tell them about the obetnye churches — and what real dedication used to look like.
